The Fisherman of Halicarnassus - Bodrum Turkey. Bodrum information, pictures, attractions.

Without any doubt, one of the most important persons for the history of Bodrum is Cevat Sakir Kabaagac known as ‘the fisherman of Halicarnassus’; who played an important role in introducing Bodrum to people in a fantastic way.

Cevat Sakir was born in Crete in 1890. His father was a historian and a writer, Mehmet Sakir Pasha, who was appointed to Crete for duty. Cevat Sakir finished Robert College and he made a bachelors degree of New Centuries History at the Oxford University in UK. With a very unfortunate accident, he lost his father with a bullet coming out from his own gun, and was sent to prison for 7 years. After getting out, he started writing essays and drew cartoon. Because of one of his essays he was exiled to Bodrum in 1927 where he fell in love with the site and spent his 25 years of his life living in Bodrum and writing about this beautiful peninsula.

He was a short-essay and novel writer but what made him world famous was his own route of fishing and leisure in the blue bays of Bodrum which by time shaped the ‘Blue Cruise’ route of Turkey that attracts millions of travelers today.

Cevat Sakir was not only a writer but his love of nature and ethnography made him also a well known travelogue. Many of the mythological and historical information about Bodrum peninsula that is told today are the information brought to us by the fisherman of Halicarnassus.

Some of his works are Merhaba Anadolu(1980), Mavi Surgun (self biography 1961), Sonsuzluk Sessiz Buyur(1983).
